149th Annual Memorial Day In Boalsburg: A Day In Towne
Monday, May 27, 2013 @ 08:00 AM: Boalsburg
The Village of Boalsburg will celebrate Memorial Day for the 149th time with a festive day of activities and a traditional ceremony of remembrance on Monday, May 27th. Boalsburg is widely known as the birthplace of Memorial Day. The first celebration was held in 1864, when three townswomen gathered in the cemetery to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. The tradition is now carried on by local Girl Scout Troop 1184. Throughout the day, nearly 20,000 visitors will have a chance to spend a day in town, tempting their taste buds with local foods and shopping for wares from artisans from across the Northeast. Three museums – the Boalsburg Heritage Museum, the Boal Mansion and the Pennsylvania Military Museum – will have family oriented activities throughout the day, including encampments and a battle by Civil War re-enactors. The day kicks off with a Fun Run at Blue Spring Park at 8:30 AM. The festival runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and features local musicians, a traditional Maypole dance at 12:30 PM and local artisans. The 6:00 PM service caps the day with a community address by John Wainright, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the retired Vice-President-International for the Archer Daniel Midland Company. Wainright and his wife Linda moved to Boalsburg in 2003 and since then he has engaged in numerous civic activities including serving as chair of the Harris Township Planning Commission and the Boalsburg Memorial Day Committee, President of the Boalsburtg Village Conservancy, a volunteer guide at the Boal Mansion Museum and a board member of the Friends of the Pennsylvania Military Museum. For a complete list of events, visit, http://www.boalmuseum.com/memorial-day-in-the-village.html or Facebook page “Memorial Day Boalsburg” or phone (814) 466-9266.

Bellefonte Childrens Fair
Saturday, June 01, 2013 @ 10:00 AM: Bellefonte
The 2013 Bellefonte Children’s Fair will be held Saturday June 1 from 10am until 2pm at the intersection of Curtin and Armor Streets. The Fair is a 64 year old tradition in Bellefonte which attracts hundreds of children for a day of inexpensive enjoyment while raising funds to provide playground equipment for the Borough’s parks. The Fair features games, with face painting, food, entertainment, community service groups – and even a great raffle. Senator Jake Corman provides a “Moon Bounce” that is one of the Fair’s most popular activities. The games target pre-school and elementary aged children, but the Fair offers plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. The food booths are a hit with kids and parents alike. The Kiwanis Club’s ice cream draws big crowds on the hot June days. One local church has taken charge of the pizza sales and another has a cookie decorating booth for kids to show off their artistic and culinary talents. There is entertainment throughout the day. Hundreds of volunteers from the community participate in the Fair. In addition to the dozens of community and civic groups that participate, 50-75 Bellefonte Area High School students volunteer their time to pick up furniture, set up the booths, and even staff some of the activities. This year the high school swim team will operate many of the games. This popular community event was started in 1958 as a fund-raiser to buy toys for children in the hospital. When the hospital moved to a new location, the Fair shifted its focus to support for the playgrounds in the Borough. All of the profits from the Fair are given to the Borough specifically for playground equipment for the parks. Organizations serving youth in the Bellefonte community are eligible to participate in the Fair. For more information about participating, contact a member of the Bellefonte Sunrise Rotary Club or send an email to belpa383@msn.com. Benefits Bellefonte Playground improvements.
