Kicks-off Boalsburg’s Year-long 150th Memorial Day Celebration

Renowned Centre County Civil War re-enactor David Felice, fresh from the 150th anniversary re-enactment of the battle of Gettysburg this year, will kick off Boalsburg’s year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of national holiday of Memorial Day in 1864 in the Boalsburg cemetery on Wednesday, December 11, at 7:30 pm with a presentation at the annual meeting of the Boalsburg Village Conservancy at Liberty Hill, 411 Beacon Circle in Boalsburg. The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served. Felice will appear in period uniform as Captain James Patterson and discuss his Company G of Boalsburg, whose soldiers included Amos Moyer who was killed at Gettysburg and whose grave was decorated by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Myers, at the first Memorial Day in 1864. Patterson was the teacher at the Boalsburg Academy and recruited many of his students at a historic meeting in August 1862 at the Old Stone Church in Boalsburg, now the site of the Zion Lutheran Church. Bellefonte Historic Victorian Christmas

Some say that “tis not the season” until they experience Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. This gentle and merry weekend of old-fashioned holiday entertainment, shopping, and social events embodies what’s good and wholesome about this holiday of all holidays. The 32nd Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas is Friday, December 13 through Sunday, December 15 with the 4th Annual Fundraiser “A Gaslight Gala” to kick off the weekend on Thursday, December 12. For opening ceremonies Friday, you are invited to gather at the Bellefonte Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. You’ll be greeted on the front steps by Mr. Dickens and the Bellefonte Community Band. . Enter the auditorium for and enjoy entertainment by the Nittany Knights, the Bellefonte Elementary School 4th & 5th Grade Choir, Middle School Women’s Chorale, St. John’s Elementary School Choir, and some other special performances, including a preview performance of the Dickens Holiday Show! A Cookie and Hot Chocolate Reception provided by the Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206 will be held in the hallway beside the auditorium immediately following Opening Ceremony. The Ballet Theatre of State College, with dancers from Performing Arts School of Central Pennsylvania, will present The Nutcracker on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 at Eisenhower Auditorium. This year’s performances will include new choreography, new scenery, and follow the traditional story of The Nutcracker. In addition, guest artist Bradley Rhoton, a PASCP alumnus, will perform as Snow King and Cavalier. Rhoton will perform in both shows. At The Nutcracker, the audience will enter a magical world where toy soldiers come to life, snowflakes dance across the stage and a Sugar Plum Fairy guides a young girl on an enchanted adventure through the Land of the Sweets. With stunning choreography, beautiful costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s traditional score, Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker is the perfect holiday tradition for all families! A special prelude concert will be performed by Central Pennsylvania Youth Orchestra. Performances are Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 15 at 3:00 p.m. at Eisenhower Auditorium, located on PSU campus. First Night®State College will take place in downtown State College, Pennsylvania and on adjacent University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University on December 31, 2013. First Night State College features musical and theatrical performances in downtown churches, carriage rides, reindeer display, a Grand Procession, indoor and outdoor resolution sculptures, and art workshops for young people downtown and at the Palmer Museum of Art on the Penn State campus. For the athletically inclined, we even present a 5K Resolution Run in conjunction with the Nittany Valley Running Club. The race starts on College Avenue near Allen St and tours parts of downtown and the Penn State Campus. The finish line is on College Avenue near Garner St. (Register for the race online at www.active.com.) We truly have something for everyone.
