 Metropolitan Opera Live HD Presents: Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini Saturday, March 16 at Noon at The State Theatre. Ostasio tricks his sister Francesca into marrying the cruel and deformed Giovanni Malatesta, known as Gianciotto. Francesca, who has never met her future husband, has been led to believe that she is to marry Paolo, Gianciotto’s handsome brother. Even though Francesca and Paolo fall in love, Francesca still marries Gianciotto and a series of events lead to the tragic deaths of both Francesca and Paolo.
Zandonai’s compelling opera, inspired by an episode from Dante’s Inferno, returns in the Met’s ravishingly beautiful production, last seen in 1986. Dramatic soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek and tenor Marcello Giordani are the doomed lovers. Marco Armiliato conducts.
